My name is Gary Steuer . I have been teaching 5 Family , 5 Animal style kungfu under the direction of GrandMaster Ark Yuey Wong since passing his personal tests , in the year 1973 .
I am no Master , but I have enough knowledge to keep someone from getting bored with this style of kungfu for a very , very long time .
I was born in New York City in the year 1944 . I started learning Judo from my older brother Joey , who learned at the Kodokan , in Japan ,while in the U.S. Army . Joey was a big man . 6' 5" , and a strong body. Joey taught self-defense to recruits , at Fort Dix , New Jersey after returning home from the Korean War . I was a short , fat kid that got picked on , so Joey thought it was time to start teaching me something to protect myself , that was in the year 1955. I kept that up until I was at a brown belt level , and Joey got transferred to Germany . I loved the contact and being able to make people go in a direction I wanted to send them ..
There was no judo available after Joey left , so my father introduced me to a friend of his named Charlie Goldman , who just happened to be Rocky Marciano's trainer . I worked with him a lot , at Stillman's boxing gym in New York City , around 57 th st , I think ...
The commute proved to be too much , and I got introduced to weight lifting at a Vic Tanny's gym near my home. I got involved with competetive lifting and bodybuilding at that time , and it was another step in my development , but I really missed tossing people around !
1963 saw me joining the U.S. Marine Corps . I loved it ! After a bit of a mixup and being sent to the wrong base after all my training things worked out well when I was assigned to Special Services and went through Physical Fitness Instructors School and worked at the base swimming pool , teaching scuba diving , and also at the base gym teaching power lifting .. Had a friend , who was later KIA in Vietnam , named Bobby Moore , who introduced me to IishenRyu karate.... I saw the possibilities , and I wanted more..
Well , I got my chance when I was sent to Vietnam . To make a long story short , I spent time with the ROK Brigade , Republic of Korea Marines... Man , were they tough ! I was able to workout with them every chance I got , and it was terrific.
I also got time spent in Okinawa , where I went through a staging Battalion , and special counter Intelligence Warfare School , in Naha.. While on Okinawa I was able to join the class , and workout with Master Shimabuku, while at Camp Hansen..
Had to leave Vietnam and spent time in Hong Kong , and being lucky enough to make the aquiantance of the Sifu of the Iron Palm School , I got to join ! that's a whole other story , for another time !
After returning to the U.S. I looked for a certain school in New York City . The Sifu There was Master Jin Foon Mark of the Praying Mantis style .. My luck , He was moving to Minneapolis .. So... Had to move myself , to Los Angeles ,California and start looking for a GrandMaster Ark Yuey Wong. Found him in L.A. Chinatown , and after several attempts, he finally said I could join the class.. The rest is history ! I was a extremely lucky man !
Anyway , I'm tired of typing , so that's it for now ! I hope you folks join me on this site !
